North Wales has one of the most elemental and powerful landscapes in the whole of Britain. Wild and uniquely mysterious, this is a land which is hugely rewarding to visit.
With Secret Landscape Tours, you will spend three days exploring sites in the Vale of Clywyd, the Denbigh Moors, Anglesey and Snowdonia.
We will be staying in comfortable farmhouse accommodation near Denbigh (click name for location).
Denbigh is a beautifully situated town in the Vale of Clywyd, with the ruins of a medieval castle and other buildings of historical interest.
Our first day will be spent in the environs of the Vale of Clywyd, a beautiful stretch of land which lies between the Clywydian Mountains and the Denbigh Moors.
We visit the holy wells at Llannrhaedr and Holywell and the beautiful well, Ffynnon Fair near St Asalph.
We see the inspirational waterfall at Dyserth and visit the largest man-made cairn in Britain, Gop Hill, reputed to be the burial place of Queen Boudicca.
Gop Cave, where Neolithic artefacts were found, is situated in a field below the cairn. We end the day up in the Clywydian Range, where we visit the hill-fort of Moel Arthur.
Our second day is spent on the Denbigh Moors and Snowdonia. We firstly visit the cairn circle and tumulus on the shores of Llyn Brenig. This is one of the most beautiful landscapes in the area, with views of the peaks of Snowdonia, coupled with the peace of a shimmering lake.
We move on to a local mystery, the remains of a prehistoric stone row in the churchyard of the hamlet of Gwytherin. The church is likely to have been built on an earlier sacred site. After a pub lunch, we move on to Snowdonia, crossing the River Conwy and driving up into the mountains to visit an awesomely rugged and beautiful landscape.
We take a scenic drive to Dinas Emrys, a wildly beautiful hill-fort, where Merlin was said to have his vision of the red and the white dragons. We then take another beautiful drive to the evocative Fairy Glen near Betws-y-Coed, an attractive small town set in the wooded Conwy valley. We then travel beside the River Conwy to Gwydir Castle, where we will stay the night.
Our third day is spent on the Isle of Anglesey or in the Welsh language, Ynys Mon. This island was a Druid stronghold in ancient times and still retains the atmosphere of a holy island. We drive across the Menai bridge and firstly visit Bryn Celli Ddu, a Neolithic chambered cairn. We also visit the enigmatic standing stone nearby. We move on a mile or so to an area near the village of Brynsiercyn and visit a burial chamber, two standing stones, a hut circle and two possible ritual centers, Caer Leb and Castell Bryn-gwyn.
We then go to the beautiful coastal town of Beaumaris, where we have lunch. After lunch, we visit Beaumaris Castle. We then drive a few miles up the coast to the holy headland known as Penmon. We visit the romantic remains of the Priory and the atmospheric holy well of St. Seirol. We finish the day near the village of Moelfre where we visit a burial chamber, an ancient chapel, Capel Eligwy, and the ritual enclosure of Din Eligwy.
ACCOMMODATION - We will be staying two nights at Cae Dai, a farm near Denbigh (click name for location), which offers comfortable bed and breakfast accommodation, engaging animals and a 1950's Museum.
